Volunteering at the WYC often feels like visiting old friends. The work happens along with conversation, games, music, good food, and more conversation.

Volunteer Positions Available

General volunteer

Hours: 5pm to 10pm once or twice per week

Tasks: Be available to youth who drop in to the WYC during operating hours.  

Activities with youth include: conversation, playing board games, doing crafts, setting the tables for dinner, eating with youth, cleaning after dinner, possibly cooking, washing dishes, stocking the youth food pantry, in-taking donations, distributing toiletries, assisting youth with laundry, assisting with homework or apartment or job search, listening to or playing music, having fun.

Qualifications: Applicants 19 years of age or older who have an interest in spending time with others are welcome to apply. The WYC is a small community comprised of a diversity of people who are committed to the fair and equal distribution of resources and who value the qualities of kindness and generosity.

Opportunities for volunteers: Volunteers at the WYC have the opportunity to meet a number of people of all ages and from all backgrounds. The WYC is a unique social justice organization which is founded upon the theories of Paulo Freire, Leo Tolstoy, Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr., and bell hooks, to name a few.  

The art and poetry program at the WYC is youth-organized and facilitated, but volunteers are welcome and encouraged to participate. They are also encouraged to lead workshops or activities if they have a special skill, talent or interest they would like to share.

Volunteers are encouraged to eat supper with the youth. Dinner is served every evening at 6:30pm. The WYC dinners are prepared on-site in a certified kitchen. Meals are nutritionally balanced with an effort to provide good sources of protein and fresh vegetables and fruit.

Volunteer Admin Assistant

Current need:  1 – 2 volunteers

Hours:  10 – 30 hours per week (flexible schedule with the possibility of working at home)

Tasks:

    • Data entry
    • Addressing envelopes
    • Writing simple thank you notes
    • Some telephone calls (but not necessary)
    • Possible simple research
    • Filing

Qualifications:  

    • Applicants should have some knowledge of Word and Excel programs.
    • Basic knowledge of English and some competency in English conversation is required.
    • Competency in other languages is considered an asset.
    • Experience in administration or secretarial work is an asset but not required.
    • Applicants should have good organizational skills.

The volunteer/s who fills this position will work closely with the ED and Youth Program Facilitator.
